The innovative project of Assoc. Prof. Muhammed Üçüncü from İzmir Biomedicine and Genome Center (IBG) has been awarded support under the TÜBİTAK-2515 COST Support Program.
Titled “Photodynamic Therapy Against Antimicrobial Resistance: Development of Merocyanine-Based Next-Generation Photosensitizers and Evaluation of aPDT Efficacy in Microbial Models,” the project aims to provide alternative solutions to the rapidly growing problem of antibiotic resistance.
Within the scope of the project, novel merocyanine-based photosensitizer molecules will be designed, and their antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) efficacy will be tested against the globally critical ESKAPE bacteria and Candida albicans.
The project team also includes Asst. Prof. Yamaç Tekintaş from the Department of Pharmaceutical Microbiology, Faculty of Pharmacy, İzmir Katip Çelebi University.
This new approach is expected to contribute to clinical applications and open new horizons in the treatment of infectious diseases in the future.
