The Izmir Biomedicine and Genome Center Biobank and Biomolecular Resources Platform (IBG-Biobank) has successfully completed its application for ISO 20387:2018 Biobanking Accreditation on December 19, 2025. This achievement represents the culmination of a major institutional goal set for 2025 and sets a strong foundation for the year ahead.
Following the submission, the Turkish Accreditation Agency (TÜRKAK) has initiated the formal evaluation process. This stage marks the transition from preparation to external assessment and is a critical step toward achieving internationally recognized accreditation.
ISO 20387 is the global standard defining requirements for the competence, impartiality, and consistent operation of biobanks. It covers the full lifecycle of biological materials and associated data, including collection, processing, storage, and distribution, while emphasizing quality management, traceability, and ethical compliance.
The TÜRKAK evaluation will involve a comprehensive review of IBG-Biobank’s quality management system, standard operating procedures, infrastructure, and alignment with national and international regulatory frameworks.
By entering the accreditation assessment phase, IBG-Biobank reaffirms its commitment to scientific excellence, reliability, and harmonization with international biobanking practices. As 2026 begins, the biobank looks forward with confidence to strengthening its role as a trusted research infrastructure serving both national and international scientific communities.
