IBG Biobank and Biomolecular Resources Platform (IBG Biobank)
The IBG Biobank and Biomolecular Resources Platform (IBG-BIOBANK) is a research biobank established to contribute to the advancement of basic and translational research in health by providing a governance model compliant with ISO 20387:2018 “Biotechnology-Biobanking-General requirements for biobanking” and an infrastructure that ensures access to high-quality, standardized biological materials. IBG-BIOBANK aims to support scientific studies by offering researchers and clinicians reliable biological samples and associated data.
The primary mission of IBG-BIOBANK is to contribute to the improvement of public health by ensuring that biological samples and associated data are stored under high-quality, easily accessible, and sustainable conditions. In this context, the biobank supports the development of biomarkers and diagnostic kits for disease prevention and early diagnosis, as well as the advancement of effective prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring approaches, particularly for rare diseases and cancers.
The application for ISO 20387 accreditation has been completed, and the evaluation process by TÜRKAK is currently ongoing.
Focusing primarily on rare disease and cancer research, IBG-BIOBANK conducts its activities with the goal of advancing scientific progress and improving quality of life under the following four main areas:
1. Establishing, storing, and sharing biological sample and data collections through research collaborations;
2. Contributing to the development and biobanking of novel models for use in cancer and rare disease research within the scope of R&D activities;
3. Developing, implementing, and supporting the sustainability of quality standards for research biobanking, as well as regulations related to ethical, legal, and social issues (ELSI);
4. Conducting activities to increase national and international awareness of research biobanking.
IBG-BIOBANK represents Türkiye as the national node within the European Research Infrastructure Consortium for Biobanking and Biomolecular Resources (BBMRI-ERIC - BBMRI.tr). BBMRI.tr supports the integration of biobanks and biomolecular resources in Türkiye into the European research ecosystem, thereby contributing to the strengthening of national and international research collaborations.

Biobank Scientific Advisory and Ethics Committee is a body that provides guidance to ensure that biological samples collected in biobanks are used in accordance with ethical principles and legal regulations. The Committee makes decisions on critical issues such as the proper conduct of informed consent processes, the prevention of unethical use of samples, and the protection of participants’ rights. It oversees the maintenance of ethical standards throughout the biobank’s research and operational activities and works to prevent any ethical violations.
In addition, the Committee evaluates public concerns regarding the use of biological samples and, when necessary, issues regulatory decisions.
The individuals listed below have been appointed to the IBG Biobank Scientific and Ethics Advisory Board following approval by the İzmir Biomedicine and Genome Center Board of Directors (dated 02 December 2022, decision no. 43) of the Biobank and Biomolecular Resources Platform.
IBG-BIOBANK conducts R&D activities aimed at developing new methods and cell/tissue experimental models for the processing and storage of samples and associated data in a manner that ensures high quality, full traceability, and the protection of sample and data security.
