04-05.12.2026
The Bioinformatics Service Unit of İzmir Biomedicine and Genome Center (IBG) will organize a two-day hands-on training program titled “Introduction to Omics Technologies: Metagenomics” on 4–5 December.
As part of this training program, participants will learn the basic principles of next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies and gain both theoretical and practical experience with the analysis of metagenomic data used to study communities of microorganisms (microbiota), including bacteria, fungi, and viruses.
Designed for beginners, the training will cover the fundamental bioinformatics analysis workflow step by step, from quality control of raw sequencing data and taxonomic classification to microbial diversity and differential abundance analyses, and the biological interpretation of results.
No prior coding or bioinformatics experience is required to participate.
Throughout the training, theoretical presentations will be supported by hands-on sessions, with the aim of helping participants understand and perform the basic metagenomic analysis workflow.
It starts with a biological question. Sequencing data are generated from a sample in the laboratory, then processed and analyzed on a computer, ultimately leading to an answer to the question. The diagram below illustrates the 11 steps in this process, what is done at each step, which tool is used, and what output is obtained. The labels in the upper-right corner indicate the session in which each step is covered during the course.
