Stem Cell and Organoid Technologies

Principal Investigator: Prof. Ersa ERDAL

Stem Cell and Organoid Technologies Laboratory focuses on developing liver and brain organoids derived from human pluripotent stem cells to create in vitro disease models that closely recapitulate human disease phenotypes. These models are employed to evaluate drug efficacy and safety in preclinical research.

In recent years, we have developed an endodermal hepatic organoid (eHEPO) technology to model rare metabolic liver diseases. This platform is being advanced as a scientifically robust and ethically superior alternative to animal models for hepatotoxicity testing, a critical step in the drug development pipeline.

In addition, our laboratory conducts fundamental research aimed at elucidating cancer stem cell biology, tumor initiation mechanisms, and the role of the tumor microenvironment, particularly in liver cancer. These studies integrate cancer cell lines and animal models to generate significant insights into cancer progression and therapeutic targeting.
